Top 10 Photos of 2014 - Photo #5: “Summer’s Brigade”
"Summer's Brigade" is # 5 in my top 10 of 2014. It was taken from my balcony on 3 August 2014 on a hot summer afternoon. There were really cool clouds building up from probably a nice thunder-boomer later in the day. The the part of Tokyo you are looking it is basically Nishi-Shinjuku and beyond looking north.
I love photographing the combination of clouds and city - basically cityscapes. The clouds that roll over or form over Tokyo can be quite interesting, especially just before or after a storm/typhoon. I don't know how many times I just glanced up to look out the window and noticed an amazing group or clouds or spectacular sunrise (my apartment faces north and east, so no sunsets). Hence the name of the collection this image is a part - Floor 23 - since I live on the 23rd floor.
On this particular day, a line of super-defined clouds were forming off to the north. I did not do much with the photo in post-processing except a bit of lightening and darkening to bring out more of the detail in the clouds. The clouds actually popped on their own. Of course converting to black and white was a must for this kind of photo. Such a conversion brings out the best in clouds.
If you look closely, you can notice the layers in the sky; the popping clouds, the flatter background sky, and the summer haze layer close to the city that is kind of melding into the popping clouds. I can't remember if it did storm later that day, but I wouldn't be surprised it if did.
